Doon Motocross Track

Motocross Track

Doon Motocross Track (often called Moate Motocross) is located in Westmeath. It's run by the guys from CCM and they do a great job. It's generallyopen 10 times or so per year for practice and normally hosts a few rounds of various championships along with a splattering of endurance events/hare and hounds.

You'll find more info about the club HERE. You're best place at the minute to find out about upcomming practice or race days is to check motocross.ie. You can also catch up with the club on Facebook.

The surface is hard underneath but they have drawn 100s of tons of sand from a nearby pit and covered the best part of the track. It's not quite soft enough for a sand tyre but an intermediate tyre like the Dunlop MX51 is ideal. It has a natural hill which makes it a great place to ride but does take away from the spectators view as it's difficult to find a good vantage point.

For practice here, as with any club in southern ireland, you need to join one club (normally €20) and then it will cost you €20-25 depending on the track. If you're not a member of any club you can join Doon on the day you arrive. The practice in Doon is always separated into adults and youths.

Dereks Tip: People always wait and wait and wait before going to a track: "I won't be fast enough", "my bike isn't good enough", "I'm too small" and any number of excuses. My advice is JUST GO. People turn up to practice days with the oldest bikes. People turn up to practice days without being great at even changing gears. THATS THE WHOLE POINT OF A PRACTICE DAY!. You won't be in the way, the faster guys will go around you, remember they've been riding for ages and the last thing they will ever do is bump into you. When you go to a practice day you're riding will come on more than it will riding around the local field in a year. Load up your bike and get to the next day - Derek.
